KENOSHA, WI - Friday April 8th, Leeward Business Advisors is hosting a school field trip and media open house at the Data Holdings Data Center, owned by the Potawatomi Tribe in Milwaukee, WI. Seventh and Eighth graders from Kenosha Technology Enhanced Curriculum (KTEC) have been participating in an after school coding club led by Leeward Business Advisors. Students will tour the Tier III, LEED Gold certified data center to deploy their programing project to LeewardBA’s regional Cloud Computing environment, called Stratus.
LeewardBA has been working with a team of fourteen students since December as an extension of the nationwide Hour of Code concept. Self-named, Club <404> students have built a video game to help other students learn spelling words. The students chose their own program idea, developed a vision, defined a scope, and then built an attainable list of features for their first release.
Dr. Angie Anderson, the principal of KTEC, and her staff were looking for a way to extend Hour of Code and give students access to a more enriching and engaging experience. “Working with Leeward, our students have had exposure to working through a process to develop a solution to a real world problem. The collaboration with Leeward is getting students to see that programming is a tool to address a need not an end in itself,” said Dr. Anderson. Leeward Business Advisors was named a KTEC Distinguished Partner of 2016 and is being honored at the KTEC Fit for Growth Gala later this month.
Michael Polzin, CEO of Leeward Business Advisors, spoke to the Kenosha News about the coding club in February. He was quoted as saying, “We’ve been very impressed with how the students have worked as a team and how they have connected with the core concepts.” Mr. Polzin is strong advocate of Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) enriched curriculum, career academy models, and context based learning. Michael believes that teaching with relevance is critical to prepare students for success.
Cloud Computing is one of the fastest growing trends in business. According to Gartner, businesses will spend $210 Billion on Cloud related services and solutions in 2016. Providers like LeewardBA offer regionally hosted Cloud Computing services to improve accessibility, support, and ease access to these advanced high-tech services. The KTEC students will tour the Data Holdings Facility and learn how mission critical real estate is designed, built, and managed to host demanding compute services like those offered by LeewardBA.
Jason Klein, CTO of Leeward Business Advisors, will teach the students about Cloud Computing and how high speed networks interconnect data centers across the globe. Mr. Klein will then turn the keyboard over to the students and enable them to deploy their spelling game into the Stratus Cloud Environment. This will enable the students to access their game from anywhere and continue to collaborate on new versions and feature releases.
